This Artist Creates Artwork By Using His Own Blood

People often want to offer me their blood, but I advise them to donate it to blood banks, which need it much more than art.”

Those are the words of Vinicius Quesada, a visual artist hailing from the streets of Brazil, who puts his body and soul into his artwork – literally. Below is a selection of works from a series he’s titled “Blood Piss Blues”, and far from being an deliberately shocking title to stir up controversy, it’s simple a genuine reference to the materials with which he’s created his art.

It’s not nearly as gory as you might imagine, his subjects veer from dark apocalyptic worlds to chimps with cigars to the psychedelic & hallucinatory.

In his interview with our friends at My Modern Met, Quesada expands:

To each colour, I add a specific amount of blood, depending on the tone. Green/yellow receives less blood and I also add urine. Red takes a lot more, but also uses real paint. This is because it’s hard to get blood, since I use only mine. I can get like 450 ml every two months. Blood is taken at the hospital, with the help of professionals.

I never considered using anyone else’s blood and I’ve never caused any harm to another living creature. It’s not something satanic or spiritual. (I’m actually an atheist).
